Doctoral Workshop

We would like to welcome PhD students to attend the workshop organized for Sunday 5th April 2009. The main objectives of the workshop are two-fold: To assist PhD students in building an international network of fellow PhD students and renowned faculty, and to assist PhD students in developing and improving their research projects.

The workshop is organized for Sunday 5th April 2009. The Doctoral Workshop will assist PhD students in building an international network and in developing and improving their research projects. Participating students will have the opportunity to present their research proposals, which will be discussed by their colleagues and renowned senior faculty. The emphasis will be on methodological issues.

The following distinguished faculty has already pledged their contribution to the workshop

  • Prof. Alessandro Ancarani, University of Catania
  • Prof. Michael Essig, Universitaet der Bundeswehr Muenchen
  • Prof. Fraser Johnson, Richard Ivey School of Business
  • Prof. Richard Pibernik, European Business School
  • Prof. Finn Wynstra, RSM Erasmus University
  • Prof. George Zsidisin, Bowling Green State University

The tentative program includes plenary Masterclasses as well as interactive workshop sessions in which research proposals of PhD candidates will be discussed.

The doctoral workshop will be guided by Dr. Erik van Raaij, Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University.

Application

Doctoral candidates interested in attending and presenting their research proposals (not results of finished research) should submit a one-page abstract by the 17th of October 2008 to ipsera2009@supplyinstitute.org. This abstract should contain your name, affiliation, project title, project description, and an indication of where you currently are in the process of completing your doctorate.

The abstracts are for planning purposes only. A full research proposal (max. 25 pages) has to be submitted before the 7th of November 2008. A letter of recommendation from your supervisor should be included with the full proposal. The full research proposals will be reviewed. The number of participants in the doctoral workshop is limited. Based on this review process, a maximum of 12 proposals will be accepted for presentation in the workshop.

Review criteria include:

  • Clarity of research purpose (relevance, objectives, and research questions)
  • Review of relevant literatures
  • Thoughtful discussion of research methods
  • Stage of the research

The stage of the research is important. It should be a proposal with some level of maturity looking for comments. If it is just an initial idea without plans for execution, there is too little content for our faculty to comment upon. On the other hand, it should neither be a project that is nearly finished, because comments from our faculty would be useless at such a stage. If your doctoral dissertation is designed as a collection of papers, your submission could be a proposal for one of those papers. We would like to emphasize that we expect all submissions to the doctoral workshop to be research proposals, not finalized manuscripts, conference papers or journal articles. You will be notified of the review process by the 12th of December 2008. Acceptance of the proposal may be conditional upon minor revisions, and the deadline for the final research proposal will be the 9th of January 2009.

Costs

There will be no extra fee for participation in the Doctoral Workshop. However, full participation in the IPSERA 2009 Conference is requested. Three PhD students will be receiving a bursary to attend the IPSERA Conference. We encourage especially students on a need and merit basis to apply for scholarships.

Please find attached the bursary application form and send your application to to Helen Walker
